Mission Statement

To ensure that all new construction jobs and remodeling projects in Fairfield conform to all state and local building codes as well as all other laws, ordinances, rules and regulations related to construction.

About Us

Ensuring that all new construction jobs and remodeling projects in Fairfield conform to building codes falls to the Building Department. Building code conformance protects public health, safety, and welfare as they relate to construction and occupancy of homes, buildings, and other structures.

The Building Department reviews plans prepared by outside architects, engineering consultants, and/or builders for compliance with the codes along with all other laws, ordinances, rules and regulations related to construction. Once reviews and approvals are granted, permits are issued and fees are collected in accordance with town policy.

The Building Department reviews all construction documents for compliance with the Connecticut State Building Code, and issues necessary permits. The Building Department also monitors all projects while under construction, performs a final inspection, and, when all conditions are met, issues a Certificate of Occupancy.

According to the Connecticut State Building Code, section R109.3: It shall be the duty of the permit holder or their agent to notify the building official that such work is ready for inspection.

Note: It is the homeowner's responsibility to be sure their contractors have permits. The Connecticut State Statutes have penalties for violations including fines up to $1,000 and possible imprisonment. Homeowners can find information on contractor registration and licensing here.

For inspector-related questions, a Building Inspector is present to answer calls between 8:30 to 10:30 & 3:30 to 4:30.
