Function

The Shellfish Commission protects shellfish habitat and helps increase shellfishing opportunities in Fairfield waters in accordance with the Fairfield Shellfish Management Plan.

Meetings

The Shellfish Commission generally meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm both in-person in the First Floor Conference Room in The Honorable John J. Sullivan Independence Hall, 725 Old Post Road, and via Conference Call Bridge. All schedules and locations are subject to change. Description

The Shellfish Commission protects shellfish habitat and helps increase shellfishing opportunities in Fairfield waters in accordance with the Fairfield Shellfish Management Plan.

Powers & Duties

Duties Include:

  • Maintaining charge of all shellfish grounds in Fairfield not under the jurisdiction of others.
  • Designating suitable places for planting or cultivating oysters, clams or mussels.
  • Issuing licenses for the taking of shellfish, fixing fees, designating the quantities, sizes, and methods of shellfish that can be taken and how they can be taken.
  • Ensuring all money collected shall be paid to the commission to be used for protection and propagation of the shellfish under its control.
  • Preparing and updating a shellfish management plan to submit to the Connecticut Commissioner of Agriculture.
  • Reviewing and commenting on applications concerning the impacts of proposed docks, piers, dredging and filling on shellfish habitat and on access to the shellfish. Habitats and access are a concern because they provide the basis for replenishing shellfish beds.
Duties May Include:

  • Prohibiting the taking of shellfish from certain designated areas for period not to exceed one year.
