About the Solid Waste & Recycling Department

The State of Connecticut has many laws affecting the collection, disposal and recycling of garbage and other refuse. Proper disposal of these items is a social and health concern to town residents so the Solid Waste and Recycling Department was established to ensure the town stays in conformance with state laws. The Solid Waste and Recycling Department is responsible for implementing the CT General Statutes, ordinances, and resolutions adopted by the Representative Town Meeting and the Board of Health regulations affecting collection, disposal and recycling of garbage and other refuse.

The Solid Waste and Recycling Department oversees the Fairfield Solid Waste and Recycling Center, otherwise referred to as the Fairfield Transfer Station or the "dump", where residents and businesses can dispose of their solid wastes. This Department also provides information on disposing of hazardous wastes and on electronics recycling among other things.

Transfer Station or Town Dump

The Transfer Station facilities on Richard White Way operate from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. The Transfer Station is closed New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

The Collection Facility is available to Fairfield residents and businesses for solid waste generated within the town. Fees are charged for some items and a vehicle permit is required to gain entry to the facility. For information on fees and permits, call the Solid Waste and Recycling Department at 203-256-3023.

Residential household garbage pick-up and curbside recycling must be arranged with a private hauler. For additional information on proper disposal and recycling see the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection website "What Do I Do With..."
