3/22/2019 - Proposals for School “Solar Carports” Introduced at Upcoming Town Meetings

The Town of Fairfield’s Sustainable Fairfield Task Force will hold two public, informational meetings to introduce pending proposals to construct carports topped with solar panels in the parking lots of Burr Elementary, Roger Ludlowe Middle, and Stratfield Elementary schools.

All students and parents, residents of adjoining neighborhoods, and members of the Fairfield community are invited to attend the meetings which will focus on explaining the project’s goals and benefits and also offer an opportunity for residents to ask questions and provide input.

Meeting Details:

Date: Thursday, March 28, 2019
Time: 7 pm to 8 pm
Place: Fairfield Woods Branch Library - Downstairs Meeting Room
1147 Fairfield Woods Road

Date: Wednesday, April 3, 2019
Time: 7 pm to 8 pm
Place: Roger Ludlowe Middle School Cafeteria
689 Unquowa Road

If approved by the Board of Education and Board of Selectmen, the solar carport project would be completed this summer. Once completed, the carports would produce electricity accounting for about 20% of the schools’ electricity needs. Over the next 20 years, the electricity savings from the carports would exceed a half million dollars and could be more than $1.2 million, depending on how much electricity prices increase over that time.

The carports would be constructed and maintained by Skyview Ventures, the same company that installed the solar carports at Fairfield Warde and Fairfield Ludlowe high schools. Those systems were designed to generate enough energy to cover approximately two-thirds of the schools’ electricity usage.

For more information about the project, please view the project FAQs on the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force website: https://fairfieldct.org/sftf/files (choose category “Carports”).
