3/14/2023 - UI Rate Forum | Thursday, March 16

Dear Fairfielders,

I wanted to share an interim update on two important items that impact our community: UI Rate Hikes and Penfield Pavilion.

UI Electric Rate Hike Info Forum
Hosted by State Senator Tony Hwang
Thursday March 16, 2023
6pm - 8pm
Fairfield Board of Education
501 Kings Highway Cutoff | 2nd Floor
Fairfield, CT

The purpose of the forum is to provide information for residents on how to most effectively weigh in on the rate increases that can actually have an impact on the outcome.

I believe this forum will also be of interest for seniors in our community as well as anyone who has and will be impacted by increased utility costs. The goal is to help residents who are struggling to pay their utility bills, and provide supplemental utility resources and supportive services for those in economic distress.

Representatives from the state Office of Consumer CounselAARP CTAlliance for Community Empowerment (formerly ABCD) will join Sen. Hwang to provide information on the rate process and available energy assistance programs.

Public hearings with the Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA) have begun regarding UI's request for an 8% increase in electric rates over the next three years
.

To tell CT regulators what you think of this potential rate hike:
Send a brief email before March 23rd to
pura.executivesecretary@ct.gov

  • Include your Name and Town, Docket Number 22-08-08.
  • Put "Say No to UI Rate Hikes" in the subject line
  • Copy Senator Hwang at Tony.Hwang@cga.ct.gov

I also want to keep residents updated on the progress of addressing Penfield Pavilion's Notice of Violation.

Last night, the Board of Finance approved the funding plan to repair the Penfield Pavilion Notice of Violation on the foundation and funding to clean the contaminated soil deposited under the building. The recording of the meeting is posted
 here

The next and final step in the process is a vote by the RTMIf the RTM passes this item, the federal delegation and I will send a reconsideration letter to FEMA. The letter will demonstrate the action taken by the Town toward compliance, with the goal of avoiding the insurance retrograde for residents who live in the flood plain, and myriad of other consequences for the town as a whole.

While this entire issue is incredibly awful and not a position any of us want to be in, it is the town’s responsibility to solve it. I’ve included additional information and documentation that I hope is helpful.
On Friday, my regularly scheduled Town update will go out.

Sincerely,

Brenda L. Kupchick
