8/19/2015 - State Offering Tax Credit and Grant Programs for Historic Properties

First Selectman Mike Tetreau announced today that the State is offering a tax credit program for owners of historic homes and a maintenance and repair grant program for Towns and religious non-profits.

Connecticut Historic Homes Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program:

The Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is offering a historic homes rehabilitation tax credit program to owner-occupied historic properties statewide. While there is no deadline to apply for this program, homeowners are encouraged to apply sooner rather than later.

According to the SHPO, “Up to 30% of the annual $3.1 million dollar allocation will be available for historic homes throughout Connecticut. Previously, the program was only available to homeowners in qualified census tracts. The program is designed to encourage new homeownership and to assist existing homeowners in maintaining or rehabilitating their property. The owner must submit applications to the SHPO for approval prior to the start of rehabilitation work.”

Maintenance and Repair Grant Program for Towns and Religious Non-Profits:

In addition, the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation (CTHP) is offering a Maintenance and Repair grant program to towns and religious non-profits listed on the State Register of Historic Places. Pre-applications are due by October 15, 2015. Regular applications are due December 15, 2015.

According to the CTHP, “The program funds capital improvements such as window restoration, sill replacement, masonry repair, and exterior paint and roofing for religious non-profits and municipalities. The CTHP is now accepting applications for its pilot program offering 1:1 matching grants for critical maintenance and repair of historic buildings, sites, and structures. Eligible applicants include municipalities (for town halls, historical museums, heritage centers, libraries and cemeteries) and non-profit religious organizations (for houses of worship, sacred places, and cemeteries).”
