1/24/2014 - Fairfield Senior Center Opening On Saturday Mornings In February And March

Fairfield, CT – January 16, 2014 – Ms. Terry Giegengack, Director of Human and Social Services, announced today that the Senior Center will be open on Saturday mornings from February 1st through March 22nd  from 9 am to 12 pm.

Ms. Giegengack explained: “We are aware that about 70% of our Fairfield residents in the baby boomer generation are still working - either part or full time.  In order to meet their needs, we believe it is important to offer some weekend and some evening hours.  The center will again have The Wednesday Night Out program from April – June.  More information about the evening program will come in the near future.”

The scheduled programs on Saturday mornings, running from February 1, 2014 – March 15, 2014 will include the following:

Pickleball ( a sport which is a cross between tennis and table tennis) – will be played in our gym from 9:30 – 12:00 on Saturday mornings.  Currently this is free of charge.  Players at all levels are welcome and everyone plays.  This activity is very popular at the center and currently 80 people are registered.  However, an average of about 10 -1 2 play on any scheduled day.  Equipment is available if you do not have your own.  The players are very friendly and primarily in the baby boomer category.

Professional Instructor Laura Dorr will be teaching two physical exercise programs, each one costing $ 5.00 per session.  From 9:30 am to 10:20 am she will teach Cross Training Strength and Conditioning, designed to be a cross-training workout that ignites one’s metabolism to burn calories, and tone muscles. Strength and cardio training intervals are used to improve flexibility, strength, balance and endurance and burn body fat.  The end of the workout  will include 10 minutes of core training.  Please bring two sets of weights, a mat and a band or tube!  The center has lighter weights if you want to bring a heavier set. This class is designed to get your heart pumping and muscles rippling.  All ability levels are welcome.

The second exercise class, Zumba, also taught by Laura Dorr, will be from 10:30 am to 11:20 am. Zumba combines Latin and International music with a fun and effective workout.  Zumba is a global fitness brand that fuses fitness, entertainment and culture into an exhilarating dance fitness sensation.

This Zumba class blends upbeat rhythms with easy to follow choreography for a total body workout that feels like a celebration. All ability levels are welcome, and Zumba Toning and Zumba Sentao will also be introduced. Class fees are $5 per class payable to Laura Dorr. Our instructor, Laura C Dorr, holds many certifications: CHHC, NC, CH, PT, Zumba, Group Ex AFAA, and is the owner of Laura Dorr Wellness. The Senior Center shares the income from the exercise classes and it is used to support programming.

The third activity planned for Saturday mornings is a new Caregiver Support Group scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. This series of support group meetings will be held free of charge for anyone age 50+ involved in caring for another person – whether an adult or child, family member or friend. The group will be led by Kate Dressel, M.S., a member of the social services staff at the Fairfield Senior Center.
